South Korea Kanvon The major part of modern Kanvon–do was under Pekche`s influence in the epoch of three states. Because of the increasing influence of Kogure it was its part during two centuries. In 550 Kanvon became an independent part of united Silla, which was called Myeongju. Only in 1308 in the epoch of Kore its current name has been given again. More than 80% territory of province of Kanvon is occupied by mountains, moreover many of them are known not only in Korea. Flat areas are located along the coast of the East Sea, and in valleys formed by Tebek-san and Sobek-san ridges, beginnings in the northern part of peninsula. In the mountains large rivers take their beginning, including Han Gan (a tributary of Seoul) and Nakton Gan (a tributary of Andon). The area around the mountains, becoming a national park according to the Korean tradition, and it was called by the names of the main peaks: Kumgang-san (Gumgangsan), Sorak-san (Seoraksan), Ode-san (Odaesan), Tebeksan (Taebaeksan). A majority of the natural sights including mountains, rivers, waterfalls, lakes are transforming the province into the Centre of active recreation.
