Mu is the name chosen by sculptor Arturo Berned for the series of his work exhibited at Toyo Ito's Grin Grin Park in Fukuoka (Japan). The sculptures were inspired by the bows and angles adopted by bodies upon carrying out the traditional Japanese bow.
The space and energy connecting the two blocks formed by each sculpture are a plastic reflection of the concept of the "mu" character. We tried to capture this same idea of space and connection in the book, commissioned by La Fábrica.
To do so, we opted to use large white spaces and a line that unites the sculpture's titles with their images, thereby guiding the reader in different directions, given that the greatest challenge imposed by the book was how to achieve its double reading, of both the texts and the pieces themselves. The first is from a Western viewpoint - for a Spanish or English speaker - reading from front to back and left to right. While the second is the traditional Japanese way of reading: from back to front and right to left, with the texts lined up vertically. The book's fascinating photographs are the work of Héctor Gómez Rioja.
