Arissa. The shadow and the photographer (1922-1936)
The photographer Antoni Arissa is one of the most outstanding representatives of the New Vision in Spain, despite the fact that he is relatively unknown. This exhibition, put on by Fundación Telefónica within the framework of the 2014 PhotoEspaña festival, is the first-ever retrospective of the artist's work. This institution, in collaboration with the exhibition's curators Rafael Levenfeld and Valentín Vallhonrat, commissioned Erretres with the exhibition catalog.
The catalog's acetate dust jacket is printed with the author's name, Arissa, in such a way so as to project the letters as shadows over the book's cloth cover, thereby referencing both the exhibition's title (The shadow and the photographer) and the cover image, in which a shadow chases the protagonist.
The chosen typography, Aktiv Grotesk, as well as the clean design of the catalog's interiors, reflect the modernity of the New Vision in 1930s Spain, when Arissa fully embraced the photographic avant-garde.
